We keep both Boer and Savannah goats on the farm, and customers often ask which one they should start with. The honest answer is: it depends on what you are optimising for.
Boer goats — built for meat
Boer goats are the choice when weight gain and carcass quality matter most. They grow fast, handle a wide range of feed, and their distinctive white bodies with reddish-brown heads make them easy to spot in a mixed herd. If you are selling into the meat market, Boer or a Boer cross is usually the better starting point.
Savannah goats — hardy and heat-tolerant
Savannahs are all-white, heat-tolerant, and known for strong disease resistance and good mothering ability. They do well on pasture that would stress other breeds, which makes them a solid choice for drier plots or first-time goat keepers who want a lower-maintenance start.
Why we cross-breed
On our own herd, we cross Boer and Savannah to combine fast weight gain with hardiness — the same cross-breeding service we offer to other farmers looking to improve their herd's market value. If you are not sure which direction to go, come see both breeds in person; that is usually the fastest way to decide.
